LASIK Surgery MythsLASIK is a common surgery that works to improve a patient’s vision safely and effectively. The surgery reshapes the cornea, correcting nearsightedness and farsightedness as well as astigmatism. Thousands of patients benefit each year from LASIK.

Despite its popularity, many myths are still associated with LASIK. Let’s take a look at some of the most common misconceptions about this procedure.

  1. LASIK is not surgery. Although LASIK is performed with a laser rather than a scalpel, it is indeed a surgery. The procedure takes about 15 minutes for each eye, with a laser aimed precisely at the cornea of the eye to reshape it and correct vision. LASIK is not a risky procedure, and complications following treatment are minimal. After about a day or two of recovery, patients can return to normal activities.
  2. LASIK results will last forever. While LASIK may permanently reduce a patient’s need for glasses or contact lenses, long-term results depend on the individual patient. Patients with mild or moderate eye prescriptions usually achieve perfect vision following surgery. Prior to surgery, your doctor will discuss possible outcomes of the procedure with patients.
  3. Anyone is a candidate for LASIK surgery.  Despite popular belief, not everyone is a suitable candidate for this surgery. The best way for a doctor to determine your eligibility for LASIK is through an extensive pre-screening process. Candidates who are under the age of 18, or have serious eye diseases like glaucoma and cataracts, are not good candidates for LASIK. Serious complications often occur when a surgeon performs LASIK on a patient who was a poor candidate for the surgery to begin with.
  4. It doesn’t matter who performs my LASIK procedure. When it comes to the health of your eyes, you should never compromise. It is important to find a doctor who is experienced with LASIK surgery, and is familiar with all of the latest technology in the procedure.  Since you will have to live with these results, don’t put yourself in the hands of an inexperienced surgeon. Choose a doctor who will offer you the best results and vision possible.
