The FAQs of LASIK Surgery
- Posted on: Apr 25 2017
One of the most popular procedures patients ask about is LASIK surgery. If you’re considering laser vision correction, check out the answers to the most frequently asked questions about this popular treatment.
What is LASIK?
LASIK is a laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea of the eye, altering the refractive properties of the cornea to correct or enhance your vision.
Am I a candidate for LASIK?
This is probably the most common question people ask about laser vision correction. To truly know if you’re a good candidate for this procedure, visit Shammas Medical Eye Center for an evaluation and consultation. Typically, the best candidates for LASIK surgery are over 18 years of age when eyes and vision are stable, free of eye infections, free of corneal scarring, and not pregnant during treatment.
How long does it take?
The LASIK procedure generally takes about 10 minutes per eye, but you can expect to be in the surgical office for about two hours.
Does it hurt?
Oral and topical anesthetic is given prior to LASIK surgery, so the procedure itself is not painful. Afterwards, most patients experience very little (if any) discomfort. Your eyes may feel gritty or water after the procedure, but this is temporary. Your doctor will provide eye drops to help alleviate these side effects.
When will I notice improved vision?
It’s quite common for patients to notice improved vision immediately after the LASIK procedure. And most people can function without wearing contact lenses one day after they procedure. Your vision will continue to gradually increase over the first five to seven days following the procedure.
How long do results last?
LASIK surgery is a permanent procedure, but it won’t prevent any age-related vision problems like cataracts or the inability to see things up close (presbyopia.
Is there any downtime?
One of the benefits of LASIK surgery is that the majority of patients can go back to their everyday activities as soon as 24 hours after the procedure.
