- Eye strain: In a society where more jobs put us in front of a computer screen, it may seem impossible to get a break for your eyes. After a day of staring at screens, your eyes may feel uncomfortable and tired. An easy way to give your eyes a rest is to institute the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at a spot 20 feet from your desk for 20 seconds. This will break up the monotony of the flat screen you stare and ease up the tension on your eyes. If it’s hard for you to remember to take a break every 20 minutes, set a timer on your phone to remind you.
- Dry eye: Dryness is often a result of the geography and climate of the area you live in, daily routines, or hormonal changes. Higher altitudes and dry climates can be harsh on some people, making them have consistent dry eyes. If you suffer from dry eyes, you can purchase over the counter artificial tears and use them a few times a day to relieve eye dryness.
- Redness: Eye redness can look scary, but it is just a bruise that has formed on the eye surface. This red blotch is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage and will usually disappear within three weeks or so.
- Red bumps: Red bumps that form on the eyelid are known as styes. They emit a painful throbbing and can make it uncomfortable to wash your face, wear makeup, or even blink. A stye forms when the oil glands on the eyelid become clogged, creating an infection. A quick way to relieve the pain is to get a wet warm compress and apply it to the infected area. Hold it there for a few seconds then reapply. At the beginning and end of the day, use baby shampoo to cleanse the eye and eyelid area. If used consistently, these two measures will heal the stye over time. If you don’t notice a difference within a week, call your eye doctor.
