Is an Online Vision Exam Worth it?
- Posted on: Aug 15 2017
The age of technology has brought us some advantages. From the comfort of home, we are now able to do everything from order food to obtain a college degree. The benefits of the internet are amazing, to say the least. However, there are pitfalls that could cost us dearly. If not careful, we may fail to see what’s right in front of our eyes: the lasting value of face to face interaction.
What we want to discuss in this post is how online vision exams may be counterproductive. Ultimately, the convenience of an online eye exam could cost you more than you ever imagined. Let’s take a closer look.
Online eye exams offer a brief assessment of visual acuity. On the surface, this sounds transparent and ideal. The process usually involves observation of lines, letters, and shapes on a computer screen. Some tests also offer a prescription at the end, after results are interpreted by an optometrist. This may sound ideal, to have your eyes checked without having to leave home. However, crucial information about eye health can be missed when the focus is on finding refractive errors only.
Why Eye Exams Are Best Performed Face-to-Face
When you visit an experienced optometrist or ophthalmologist for routine eye exams, you can learn quite a bit about your current and potential future needs. A professional exam:
- Achieves the most accurate reading of vision errors. This leads to the proper prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. When your vision is tested in the presence of a trained eye doctor, there is the ability to learn more, to ask questions, and to have greater depth of investigation into symptoms such as blurred vision or poor night vision.
- Looks at the structure of the eye, not just at the vision. The observation performed in a routine ophthalmic exam enables your eye doctor to detect warning signs of potentially serious conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and more.
- May be ultimately less costly than a convenient online exam. The cost-effectiveness of a professional exam may be achieved with insurance coverage, more precise eyeglass prescriptions, and detection of “hidden” eye conditions.
